3D Catan

I made a 3D version of the board game Settlers of Catan as a birthday gift for a friend.

Catan with a twist

This 3D version of the board game Catan has the same rules and gameplay as the original, but with a slightly different look. The tiles consist of a 3D-printed center with a laser-cut wooden edge. The external blue frame is also laser-cut wood. All of the playing pieces are 3D-printed, and the number tokens are laser-cut wood.

An over-engineered box

The 3D tiles don’t stack nicely like the flat tiles in the original version of Catan. To address this problem I also designed and built a custom box for the game. The case has one side with slots to store all the tiles and the other has boxes and a shelf for the remaining game pieces and flat border pieces. All of the box pieces are laser cut and bonded with wood glue.

Some detailed tiles

The game has 5 main tile pieces, each with its unique design. I can’t claim any credit for the painting and how good the tiles look, I have a friend who is far more talented than me to help with all the painting on this project.
