“On Air” Sign
A bit of room decor, I made a faux neon sign using LEDs to simulate the look of neon tubing.
Skills - Electronics, Soldering, Laser Cutting
LEDs, wires, and hot glue
The Neon Flex LED strips are set into the base of acrylic and connected through the back. The letters have holes in the back so I could solder wires through and connect the LEDs in one continuous strip.
Laser cut acrylic base
For the structure of the sign, I laser cut 2 layers of 1/4” clear acrylic. The bottom layer had holes for wires to pass through and a slot for the power cable to exit. The top layer had slots for the LEDs to rest within and keep them in the shape of the letters. I used some sandpaper to give the top a frosted effect which hides the wiring in the back.
And its done!
The finished product turned out really great, which made the hours of soldering, unsoldering, and resoldering worth it. The LED was way way brighter than I thought it would be so I bought a dimmer switch attachment that I spliced into the power cord.
