LHR Wheel Hub

Longhorn Racing Electric is a Formula SAE team. In my freshman year I worked on the Unsprung subsystem and spent most of my time on this wheel hub assembly.

Skills - CAD, CAM, GD&T, Manual Milling, Machinist Drawings

CAD and drawings

As part of the project, I had to create drawings of parts that would be machined, manually or on the CNC. I learned how to make proper drawings for machining, taking into consideration things like dimensioning, datums, and tolerances.

A slight design oversight

The parts pictured were cut on a water jet by an external company. During the design process, we didn't realize that we wouldn't be able to bend the tabs using our sheet metal brake. When the parts came in and we realized this, I got the fun job of bending each tab by hand using a vice and mallet (This was the first time I understood what designing for manufacturing meant).

Manual milling

To test the wheel at different camber angles we had to machine camber shims at various thicknesses. This is when I first got experience in manual milling and machining to tolerances. I’ll say this was very repetitive and not the most fun but it taught me a lot that I then built upon later.
